Tears and outrage were my first reactions toward the victims and the perpetrators of the San-Lu milk powder scandal, then feeling so powerless in deterring any money-driven maliciousness, I began to wonder what’s for dinner for my self.
Meat (pork, beef, chicken etc.) and dairy products in the States are known for hormone and antibiotic addition, while the later is also commonly found in cultured aquatic products such as fish, shells and crustaceans, but no problem at this point since it’s ok to go without them. Now consider to be a vegan, but vegetables are grown with pesticides and fungicides to keep bugs away, no question there will be pesticide residues in the final produce. How about having bread only for dinner? My colleague upset me with the “dirty secrets” of his folks growing rice/wheat with local polluted water tainted with pesticides and industrial wastes.
Last resort for food safety, go organic. A web search reveals organic milk is not significantly different from regular ones in antibiotic content, though organic veggies contain roughly a third of the chemicals found in other non-organic counterparts (USDA data). This really gives me some comfort by far, then I saw an article citing the results from “Consumer Confidence Group” saying organic farmers use manures which are more dangerous than the synthetic chemicals in bio-contamination like E. coli!
I am getting even more puzzled after the research, so I am going back to whatever my appetite pleases for my dinner.
